Common Dismissals (Outs)
Here are some common dismissals, or outs, in cricket. There are many more, but the following dismissal modes are common.
- Bowled – The bowler’s delivery hits the stumps.
- Caught — A fielder catches the ball before it touches the ground after a batter hits it in the air.
- The batsman is stumped – he steps out of the crease to hit the ball but misses. The wicketkeeper then removes the bails before the batsman can get their bat or any part of their body behind the batting crease.
- Run out — The batter pushes the ball to a gap and sprints away. Before either striker or non-striker reaches the crease, a fielder receives the ball and hits the stumps directly, or a player collects the ball from the fielder and knocks off the bails.
- LBW (leg before wicket) — Batsman tries to hit the ball, misses, and the ball hits the pad. If the umpire believes it would have hit the stumps, the batter is out. It is determined by a number of factors, including where the ball was pitched, where the impact occurred, and whether the batsman attempted to strike the ball.
