Hollywood has completely dominated the superhero genre, as well as global film in general. However, the Indian cinema industry has managed to hold its place and has not yet allowed Hollywood to take over Indian theatres. Grats on this!
However, why aren’t our desi superheroes working in their own country? It’s partly due to the poor quality and low-grade VFX, but it’s also due to the audience’s responsibility.
There is supply where there is demand. In any case, let’s take a look at some of the best Indian Superhero Movies.
Best Indian Superhero Movies of All Time
1. Krrish (2006)
Krrish, the direct sequel to Koi… Mil Gaya a Hindi film, was the film that kicked off the whole superhero craze in India. . Rakesh and Hritik Roshan, father, and son, have yet to deliver a box office flop.
Our Krishna, or Krrish, is depicted combating evil in the shape of an evil scientist attempting to construct a time machine in Krrish. The picture appealed to both children and young adults. It is still considered one of the few successful Indian superhero films of all time.
2. Ra.One (2011)
Anubhav Sinha’s Ra. One was one of the rare Indian science fiction/superhero films that dared to go beyond what anyone could have imagined.
The film included some mad-cool action sequences and a good performance by SRK, telling the story of a programmer named Shekhar who develops a VR video game, the enemy of which comes into the real world to catch the hero, a Shekhar lookalike superhero named G.One.
3. Mr. India (1987)
This is the only Indian film that has held up over time. It’s been nearly 30 years since the film was released, and it still has a great rewatch value, thanks in large part to the late Shri Amrish Puri Ji, the iconic villain. The story follows Arun, a good guy at heart who discovers a device that allows him to become invisible.
He employs his superpower to combat Mogambo, an evil plotter hell-bent on destroying the country. The film was one of the biggest hits of the year, and for all the right reasons, thanks to some catchy music and a healthy dose of humor. Mr. India is included in our list of the Best Invisibility Films.
4. Bhavesh Joshi Superhero (2018)
This was one of those films that deserved a lot more applause from the audience than it received. It was one of the Best Indian Superhero Movies the Indian people had ever seen, with some political implications and a grim storyline.
However, because of poor marketing and the lack of a major star, this gem was lost in the void. The film was an outright joy of cinematography, music, acting, and screenplay, following Sikander as he transforms into a superhero to honor the memory of his late companion. It is a winner!
5. Toofan (1989)
If we say this was the first Indian superhero film, we are not exaggerating. The film, which starred Amitabh Bachchan as a nice guy who joins forces with his outlaw brother to seek revenge on Shaitan Singh for the murder of their father, was a box office success when it was released.
It did not, however, stand the test of time and is usually regarded as one of Amitabh’s biggest flops. But give filmmaker Ketan Desai credit for at least deviating from the script and trying something different.
6. Mugamoodi (2012)
Mugamoodi is a Tamil superhero film that rose to prominence thanks to director Mysskin, who is known for his stunning thrillers. The movie did not let me down.
The film dug into some very genuine problems by telling the story of an unhappy martial artist named Bruce who is unable to generate money from his craft. He assists the police in bringing down a gang, earning the gang leader Dragon’s enmity. The film was a smash, with some of the most impressive stunts ever seen in an Indian film.
7. Robot and 2.0 (2011 and 2018)
Thalaivar portrays himself as a superhero in every film, therefore it was only natural that he would do anything related to the genre. He portrays both a scientist and his creation, Chitti the Robot, the superhero in Robot.
The film included some breathtaking cool action sequences, making it one of India’s highest-grossing films of all time. The picture produced a sequel, which was even more spectacular in terms of action and box office receipts.
8. Kanthaswamy (2009)
In the disguise of a superhero film, Kanthaswamy is a fantasy thriller that revolves around the concept of corruption in Indian society. Mallana, a CBI officer, is the leading figure.
He possesses the ability to grant anyone’s desires, which he fulfills, but only to the poor and needy. But he also has to look after the rest of the country. As a result, he brings down a crony entrepreneur who has hidden large sums of black money.
9. Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2019)
Anurag Kashyap, the ultimate deity of the Indian indie cinema industry, has worked with director Vasan Bala for a long time. So, how would he do something that isn’t absolutely distinct and original?
The film portrays the story of a young child who suffers from a disorder that keeps him pain-free. He sets out to save his childhood idol and sweetheart in order to do something useful with his life. It was a bizarre film that deserved to be seen more than once.
10. Shahenshah (1988)
Amitabh Bachchan was at his best action persona in Shahenshah, which was released the next year after Toofan. Shahenshah was a problem for the bad guys since he was a simple-minded and corrupt police officer by day and a vigilante by night.
The film, directed by Tinnu Anand, was an out-and-out action entertainer that drew large crowds to the theatres. Who can forget the famous sentence, “Rishte mein to hum tumhare baap hote hai… Naam hai… Shahenshah!” Haha. It’s a timeless classic. Shahenshah is regarded as one of the best Indian vigilante films ever made.
